Meaning
A dimensionless threshold in compressible fluid flow determines the point at which a gas reaches sonic velocity at a restriction. The critical pressure ratio defines the transition between subcritical flow and choked flow in valves or vents. Once this value is reached, the mass flow rate becomes independent of the downstream pressure.
Flow Limitation
The velocity of a gas through a narrow orifice cannot exceed the local speed of sound. At the critical pressure ratio, a decrease in back pressure no longer increases the volume of gas moving through the system. This condition acts as a primary safety consideration for relief valves in pressurized battery enclosures.
A designer calculates the maximum discharge rate to prevent housing failure.
Sonic Velocity
Acoustic waves cannot travel upstream when the gas particles are moving at the same speed. Maintaining the critical pressure ratio ensures that the upstream environment is isolated from pressure fluctuations on the exit side. This decoupling allows for precise control of gas delivery in chemical vapor deposition.
Calculation Variable
The value depends on the heat capacity of the specific gas being measured. For air, the critical pressure ratio is approximately zero point five two eight. Designers use this constant for venting hardware.
