Meaning
Thin-film deposition coatings applied via physical vapor deposition that incorporate aluminum, chromium, and nitrogen are used to protect metalworking tools from wear. A PVD AlCrN coating forms a hard, wear-resistant layer that exhibits high thermal stability and oxidation resistance. This coating is commonly applied to forming punches, cutting blades, and extrusion dies to extend their service life.
Its protective effect is limited to applications where the operating temperature does not exceed nine hundred degrees Celsius.
Thermal Stability
The addition of aluminum promotes the formation of a stable, protective aluminum oxide layer on the surface at high temperatures. Utilizing a PVD AlCrN coating allows the cutting edge of the tool to withstand intense localized frictional heating without degrading.
Wear Mechanism
The dense microcrystalline structure of the film resists abrasive wear and prevents material transfer from ductile workpieces. Applying a PVD AlCrN coating to stamping tooling reduces the risk of adhesive wear when forming aluminum or stainless steel sheets.
Hardness Advantage
With a hardness value that can exceed thirty-two hundred HV, this film provides excellent protection against surface scratching. Implementing PVD AlCrN coating ensures that the sharp geometry of precision slitting tools is maintained over extended production cycles.
