Meaning
Continuous thermal processing technique heats loose materials in a slightly tilted rotating cylinder to ensure uniform exposure to high temperatures. For battery materials manufacturing, rotary kiln calcination is used to process precursor carbon powders or cathode active chemicals. This method allows for high-throughput treatment under controlled gas atmospheres.
Thermal Processing
The rotating cylinder is heated externally by gas burners or electric elements to establish a precise temperature profile. During rotary kiln calcination, the material rolls down the length of the cylinder while being continuously mixed. This agitation prevents local hotspots and guarantees that every particle receives the same thermal history.
Material Transport
The residence time in the kiln is controlled by the rotation speed and the angle of inclination. When processing anode carbons, maintaining an inert nitrogen atmosphere within the cylinder is critical to prevent unwanted oxidation. This continuous feed system eliminates the batch-to-batch variation often found in static furnace operations.
The hot calcined powder is cooled in a protective atmosphere before being packaged or subjected to further milled processing.
Operation Standard
Kiln construction materials must withstand temperatures exceeding one thousand two hundred degrees Celsius without introducing metallic contaminants. Internal lifters can be installed to improve gas-solid contact. Energy efficiency is optimized by recycling the hot flue gas.
