Meaning
Analytical instrumentation designed to measure sub parts per million concentrations of oxygen in inert gas streams protects sensitive processes from oxidation and contamination. The trace oxygen analyzer is essential in industries like semiconductor manufacturing and metal powder production, where even trace levels of oxygen can cause defects or material degradation. These devices must provide rapid and accurate measurements to allow for immediate process intervention if a leak occurs.
Sensor Technology
Electrochemical or zirconium oxide sensors are used to detect minute quantities of the target gas. Electrochemical sensors utilize a gas permeable membrane and an electrolyte to generate a current proportional to the oxygen concentration. Zirconium oxide sensors operate at high temperatures and measure the voltage generated across a ceramic membrane.
Calibration Routine
High purity certified reference gases are used to establish the calibration points. This routine prevents sensor drift from introducing errors.
Process Integration
Inline installation of the sensor allows for real time monitoring of the gas purity in the main distribution lines. If the measured level exceeds the predefined threshold, the trace oxygen analyzer triggers an automated bypass valve to divert the contaminated gas away from the process equipment. This protects the manufacturing line from damage.
