Meaning
Lightweight metallic compositions provide high strength and corrosion resistance for demanding structural environments. The f357 alloy is a premium aluminum casting material containing silicon and magnesium as its primary alloying elements. It is frequently selected for battery enclosures and aerospace components due to its excellent castability and mechanical properties.
This specific grade offers a higher purity level than standard variants, which enhances ductility and fracture toughness.
Material Composition
Chemical specifications for this material limit iron content to extremely low levels to prevent the formation of brittle phases. Within f357 alloy, the silicon content typically ranges from 6.5 to 7.5 percent to ensure fluid flow during the casting of complex thin-walled geometries. Magnesium provides the basis for precipitation hardening during subsequent heat treatment cycles.
Titanium is often added in trace amounts as a grain refiner to improve the uniformity of the microstructure.
Thermal Processing
Heat treatment optimizes the balance between tensile strength and elongation for critical parts. Achieving peak performance for f357 alloy requires a solution heat treatment followed by artificial aging, a process known as t6 tempering. The temperature and duration of these stages determine the final hardness and the ability of the component to withstand impact loads without cracking.
Performance Value
Mechanical reliability makes this material a standard choice for high-voltage battery frames.
