Meaning
Release of flammable gaseous molecules from an electrochemical cell happens during specific charging stages or failure modes when water or electrolyte components decompose at the electrodes. A buildup of pressure inside the cell leads to the opening of a safety vent to prevent a rupture. This hydrogen gas off gassing is a significant safety concern because the gas can form explosive mixtures with air.
It governs the design of the ventilation systems and the placement of gas sensors within the battery room. The process occurs most frequently during overcharging or when a cell is operating at extreme temperatures.
Chemical Release
Breakdown of the electrolyte is the primary source of the volatile substances released during an event. When hydrogen gas off gassing occurs, it indicates that the internal chemistry of the cell is no longer stable. High voltage or high heat causes the molecules in the liquid to split into their constituent parts.
This reaction is often accompanied by the release of other toxic vapors and heat. Once the gas is outside the cell, it tends to collect in the highest parts of the enclosure because it is lighter than air. This accumulation creates a risk of ignition from electrical sparks or hot surfaces.
Venting Mechanism
Safety devices are integrated into the cell housing to provide a controlled path for the release of internal pressure. When the pressure exceeds a certain limit, the seal breaks and allows for hydrogen gas off gassing to proceed into the surrounding area. This prevents the metal or plastic case from exploding and sending debris across the room.
The vent is designed to stay closed during normal operation to keep moisture and contaminants out of the cell. If the vent opens, the cell is permanently damaged and must be removed from the system. Monitoring the status of these vents provides a clear indication of the health of the battery pack.
Safety Detection
Monitoring for the presence of flammable gases is a standard requirement for any indoor battery installation. If hydrogen gas off gassing is detected, the management system must immediately trigger an alarm and increase the ventilation rate. High speed fans are used to dilute the gas and move it safely out of the building.
In some cases, the system will also disconnect the electrical load to prevent further heating of the cells. Fire codes specify the sensitivity and the location of the sensors to ensure early detection. These safety measures protect the building and the personnel from the risk of a gas explosion.
