Meaning
Suppression hardware installations located within the storage shelving provide targeted water delivery to individual battery modules during a fire event. Using in-rack sprinklers is a common requirement for high bay warehouses where overhead systems cannot penetrate the dense layers of storage to reach a fire at the bottom of a rack. This system consists of a network of pipes and sprinkler heads that are mounted directly to the rack structure at multiple levels.
It ensures that water is discharged exactly where it is needed, cooling the affected battery modules and preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring racks. This targeted approach is essential for managing the high heat release rates associated with lithium ion battery fires.
Spray Geometry
Positioning the sprinkler heads to cover every inch of the storage shelf is the most important part of the engineering design. During the installation of in-rack sprinklers, the nozzles are oriented to spray water directly into the flue spaces and across the face of the battery modules. This geometry ensures that even a fire starting in the middle of a pallet is quickly reached by the suppression agent.
The design must account for the height of the shelves and the size of the pallets to avoid any dry spots where a fire could continue to grow. Testing the spray pattern during the commissioning phase verifies that the system will perform as expected in a real emergency, providing the coverage needed to stop thermal runaway.
Hydraulic Load
Calculating the water pressure and flow rate for a system with hundreds of individual heads requires a robust water supply and large diameter pipes. The in-rack sprinklers must be able to deliver a specific density of water, often measured in gallons per minute per square foot, to the most remote part of the warehouse. This hydraulic demand is added to the requirements of the overhead system, necessitating high capacity fire pumps and large onsite water storage tanks.
Engineers use computer models to simulate the flow of water through the complex network of pipes to ensure that the pressure remains high even when multiple levels are activated. This ensures that the system has the power to suppress an intense chemical fire before it can cause a structural collapse.
Installation Depth
Mounting the pipes and heads deep within the rack structure protects the system from damage while ensuring it remains close to the hazard. For effective in-rack sprinklers, the hardware must be placed behind the structural members of the rack to prevent it from being hit by forklifts or pallets during normal operations. This placement requires careful coordination between the rack manufacturer and the fire protection contractor to ensure everything fits within the available space.
Specialized cages or guards are often used to provide extra protection for the sprinkler heads without blocking the flow of water. These physical safeguards ensure that the safety system remains functional for years, even in a busy and fast paced warehouse environment.
