Meaning
Internal flow resistance measurements of a fluid describe the friction between adjacent molecular layers as they move past each other under an applied shear stress. In the context of battery manufacturing, liquid viscosity is a critical physical property of the electrolyte and the electrode slurries, influencing both the manufacturing process and the final performance of the cell. The flow behavior of these fluids determines how easily they can be processed and how well they penetrate the porous structures of the electrodes.
Proper control of this property is essential for high quality battery production.
Slurry Processing
Mechanical behavior of the active material slurries during the coating process is highly dependent on this flow resistance. The slurry, which contains the active materials, binders, and conductive additives, must have the correct flow characteristics to ensure a uniform coating on the current collector foils. If the flow resistance is too high, the coating may be uneven or contain defects, which reduces the quality of the electrode.
Conversely, if it is too low, the slurry may run or drip, leading to inconsistent thickness and density.
Electrolyte Wetting
Transport of lithium ions within the cell is directly influenced by the flow characteristics of the liquid electrolyte. A low flow resistance is desirable for the electrolyte as it allows for rapid and complete wetting of the porous separator and electrode structures during the filling process. This rapid wetting reduces the formation of dry spots, which can cause localized high current densities and accelerated degradation during operation.
Lower viscosity also enhances the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, especially at low temperatures.
Quality Control
Industrial manufacturing lines use continuous monitoring of this fluid property to maintain consistency across different batches of slurries and electrolytes. Changes in the flow behavior can indicate variations in the molecular weight of the binders or the concentration of the solvents. By maintaining strict control over this parameter, manufacturers can ensure that every cell produced meets the specified performance and safety standards.
The optimization of this property is a key factor in improving the throughput and yield of the production line.
