Meaning
Precision electromechanical instrument that measures linear displacement by converting the position of a moving core into a proportional electrical signal. An lvdt sensor is used in battery testing to track the expansion and contraction of cells with sub micron accuracy.
Operating Principle
Electromagnetic induction between a primary coil and two secondary coils provides the basis for the measurement. As the core moves in response to the swelling of the battery, the lvdt sensor generates a voltage that indicates the exact distance traveled. This non contact method ensures that the sensor does not interfere with the mechanical behavior of the cell.
Signal Resolution
High sensitivity allows for the detection of very small changes in electrode thickness during the various stages of lithiation. If the lvdt sensor is calibrated correctly, it can identify the transition between different electrochemical phases. The output remains stable over long periods and is resistant to electrical noise.
Strain Measurement
Data from these sensors are necessary for validating mechanical models of the battery pack under actual operating conditions. While other sensors might drift or lose accuracy under load, the lvdt sensor provides a reliable record of both reversible and irreversible growth. Engineers use this information to select the appropriate materials for cell compression and to refine the safety margins of the enclosure.
