Meaning
Web tension measurement defines the mechanical elongation of a continuous material web along its running direction during roll-to-roll manufacturing. For battery separators, machine direction tensile strain measures the percentage stretch of the polymer membrane under the pulling forces of the winding and coating machinery. This strain is calculated by comparing the stretched length to the original unstretched length under a given tensile load.
It does not measure the transverse or cross-web direction strain.
Separator Integrity
Excessive strain during processing can cause the separator to neck and lose its uniform pore structure. When the machine direction tensile strain exceeds critical limits, the pores collapse, which reduces the ionic conductivity of the material. This collapse leads to non-uniform current density and localized plating.
Process Control
High-precision tension transducers and load cells are integrated into the roll-to-roll machinery to monitor the running web. Maintaining machine direction tensile strain within the elastic region prevents permanent plastic deformation of the separator. This control ensures consistent quality across the entire roll.
Sourcing Standard
Technical procurement sheets define the maximum allowable elongation of the separator at specific tension levels to ensure processability on high-speed lines. Material batches with low resistance to machine direction tensile strain are rejected by manufacturing teams. This specification prevents web breaks and costly line downtime.
