Meaning
Gas density calculation identifies the proportion of specific chemical species within the free space of a sealed container. Measuring the ullage concentration provides a warning sign of electrolyte breakdown or electrolyte leakage before a total failure occurs. This data point helps in assessing the health of a battery pack during routine maintenance.
Sensors detect changes in the vapor profile that indicate the presence of volatile organic compounds.
Vapor Density
Atmospheric conditions inside the container influence how the gas distributes itself. A high ullage concentration of solvent vapors suggests that the primary seals of the cells are no longer effective. The concentration level is influenced by the temperature and the total volume of the available void.
Dense vapors may settle at the bottom of the enclosure, creating localized hazards.
Saturation Point
Partial pressure of the liquid electrolyte determines the maximum amount of gas that the air can hold. If the ullage concentration reaches the saturation point, the vapor will begin to condense on the cooler surfaces of the container. This liquid can cause electrical shorts if it accumulates on the busbars or circuit boards.
Monitoring the dew point helps in predicting when this condensation will occur.
Flash Point
Volatile gases within the headspace can become ignitable if the temperature rises. Keeping the ullage concentration below the flammability limit is a requirement for safe battery storage and transport. Automated venting systems can be triggered if the sensors detect a sudden spike in organic vapors.
Thermal management systems maintain the environment below the temperature that triggers hazardous concentrations.
