Meaning
Reactive polymer systems are used for structural bonding and thermal management in electric vehicle battery packs. Formulated as a two-part mixture, 2k polyurethane cures at room temperature to provide both high adhesive strength and vibration damping. This material helps maintain structural integrity while securing cells to cooling plates.
Designers select it for its curing predictability and customisable viscosity.
Curing Process
Chemical cross-linking begins immediately upon mixing the resin and catalyst components in a static nozzle. This reaction is exothermic and proceeds without requiring moisture. Proper mixing ratios prevent unreacted monomers.
Thermal Dissipation
Heat transfer is enhanced when the polymeric matrix is filled with ceramic particles like alumina or aluminum trihydrate. This configuration allows the 2k polyurethane to draw excess heat away from the cells during rapid charging. Sourcing teams prioritize formulations that achieve high thermal conductivity without sacrificing dispensability.
The thermal conductivity of these materials typically ranges between one and three watts per meter-kelvin.
Mechanical Duty
Bonded components experience complex shear and tensile forces during vehicle operation. In this role, the cured adhesive acts as a dampener for high-frequency vibrations that could otherwise damage electrical interconnects. Toughness is a defining feature of this polymer, ensuring that joints do not fail catastrophically under sudden impact or crash conditions.
This resistance to dynamic stresses helps prevent structural failure in the pack.
