Meaning
Heat exchange assembly that regulates the thermal environment of electrochemical cells using a circulating fluid. An active cooling plate consists of a metallic or composite structure containing internal channels through which a refrigerant or liquid coolant flows.
Thermal Interface
Physical contact between the cell and the cooling surface determines the efficiency of the heat transfer. An active cooling plate often requires a thin layer of grease or a gap filler to ensure that thermal energy moves from the battery into the fluid without resistance from air pockets.
Fluid Resistance
Internal channel geometry influences the pressure drop and the volume of coolant required for effective operation. Because the active cooling plate must remove heat consistently across a large surface, the design often incorporates serpentine or manifolded paths to maintain flow velocity. A high pressure drop increases the parasitic load on the vehicle cooling system.
Surface Uniformity
Temperature variations across the battery module affect the internal resistance and longevity of the individual cells. While the active cooling plate manages peak temperatures during high power demands, it also ensures that no single cell operates significantly hotter than its neighbors. Consistent thermal distribution prevents the premature failure of the pack.
