Meaning
High-speed cobalt tool steel alloy provides extreme red hardness and wear resistance in demanding machining environments. Engineers select aisi m42 for cutting tools that must maintain a sharp edge under high thermal loads. This molybdenum-based alloy contains approximately eight percent cobalt to increase the temperature at which the material softens.
The material finds use in drills and milling cutters where production speed is the primary driver of cost.
Alloy Composition
Elemental proportions within the matrix determine the specific performance characteristics of the metal. The presence of carbon and tungsten in aisi m42 facilitates the formation of hard carbides while vanadium enhances abrasion resistance. These elements work together to provide a balance between toughness and hardness.
Chromium additions provide deep hardening during the quenching process.
Cutting Performance
Heat resistance allows for higher surface speeds than standard high speed steels. When aisi m42 undergoes friction during metal removal, the cobalt prevents the cutting edge from deforming. This property reduces downtime by extending the interval between tool regrinds.
Hardness levels typically reach sixty-eight to seventy on the Rockwell C scale.
Industrial Application
Severe cutting operations involving tough superalloys require specific mechanical properties found in this grade. Because aisi m42 resists chipping better than most carbide tools, it remains the standard for interrupted cuts.
