Meaning
Tabulated testing protocol that evaluates the discharge capacity and efficiency of a battery across a range of current densities. A c-rate matrix provides a systematic view of how a cell performs under different power demands, from slow trickle charging to high current discharge.
Experimental Design
Test sequences usually involve a series of cycles where the discharge rate increases while the charging rate remains constant. The c-rate matrix identifies the point at which internal resistance causes the available capacity to drop significantly. Data collected from these tests inform the power limits set in a battery management system.
Data Analysis
Performance curves derived from the matrix allow engineers to calculate the Peukert constant for a specific chemistry. If the c-rate matrix reveals a sharp decline in efficiency at 2C, the application may require a larger pack or a different cell design. These results are visualized as a three dimensional plot of capacity against rate and temperature.
Capacity Evaluation
Rated capacity is rarely achieved at high currents due to voltage sag and heat generation. While the c-rate matrix quantifies these losses, it also demonstrates the ability of the cell to recover capacity once the load is reduced. This testing remains a standard requirement for qualifying new cell suppliers in the automotive industry.
