Meaning
Areal mass density of inorganic refractory particles deposited onto a polymeric separator substrate establishes the physical quantity of functional thermal insulation applied per square metre. Ceramic coating weight, expressed in grams per square metre, determines the protective layer thickness that prevents micro-shorting and catastrophic thermal shrinkage during cell overheating. The measurement governs safety performance and dry electrode stack thickness, losing its predictive value when binder degradation causes particulate flaking or coating delamination under winding tension.
Coating Composition
Slurries containing submicron alumina, boehmite or zirconia particles dispersed with polymeric binders are gravure coated onto one or both faces of a microporous base film. Controlled drying evaporates the carrier solvent, leaving an inorganic matrix that resists melting beyond five hundred degrees Celsius. Gravimetric analysis calculates the final weight by subtracting the bare substrate mass from the finished coated separator sample dried to constant mass.
Uniformity across the coated web requires continuous monitoring with beta-gauge or X-ray attenuation sensors on the production line.
Thermal Stability
High particle densities increase the physical barrier thickness, impeding electrical contact between positive and negative electrodes if the underlying polyethylene or polypropylene substrate shrinks during high-temperature exposure. Excessive coating mass, however, adds dead weight to the cell stack, reducing gravimetric energy density while occupying space that could otherwise hold active electrode material. Insufficient particle mass creates thin spots where localized thermal collapse can induce short circuits.
Cell engineering balances safety margins against volumetric trade-offs by selecting the thinnest stable coating layer that prevents thermal runaway in hot-box tests.
Batch Acceptance
Procurement specifications for high-energy automotive cells prescribe narrow limits for areal coating mass on incoming separator stock. Receiving laboratories conduct gravimetric burn-off or solvent dissolution tests on roll samples to confirm compliance with agreed tolerance bands. Coatings that deviate below the minimum weight threshold fail safety compliance, while overweight shipments are rejected for reducing pack-level specific energy.
Coated films must also demonstrate uniform binder adhesion without particulate shedding during high-speed slitting and cell assembly.
