Meaning
Non-conductive polymer sheets provide a physical barrier against high-voltage leakage in battery assemblies. Integrating a dielectric isolation film prevents electrical short circuits between cells and the cooling plate or structural housing. The material must withstand high potential testing without experiencing a puncture.
Voltage Suppression
Electrical separation depends on the specific resistance of the polymer used in the construction. A dielectric isolation film blocks the migration of electrons even when subjected to the high operating voltages of a series-connected pack. This barrier is required for maintaining the safety of the external chassis.
Dielectric Strength
Material selection is driven by the breakdown voltage rating which defines the maximum field strength the layer can endure. If a dielectric isolation film is too thin or contains impurities, the electrical field may overcome the insulating properties and cause an arc. Manufacturers specify this value in kilovolts per millimeter.
Mechanical Durability
Physical handling during the stack assembly process subjects the insulator to abrasion and puncture risks. A durable dielectric isolation film resists tearing when pressed against the sharp edges of a cell casing or busbar. Integrity is verified through end of line isolation testing.
Without sufficient resistance to physical deformation, the film can be breached during the compression of the module, creating a direct path for a short circuit that bypasses the intended safety controls.
