Meaning
Stainless steel conduit treated with an electrochemical process to remove surface imperfections and minimize the internal roughness is used to transport ultra high purity gases in semiconductor and battery manufacturing. Utilizing electropolished 316l tubing prevents particulate generation and reduces gas adsorption on the tube walls. The low carbon content of the 316L alloy prevents chromium carbide precipitation during welding, preserving the alloy’s structural integrity and corrosion protection.
Surface Finish
Microscopic leveling is achieved by dissolving the high points of the surface roughness profile in an acid bath under electric current. This process yields a mirror like finish with a typical average roughness of less than zero point one five micrometers. The smooth surface prevents moisture from clinging to microscopic crevices, which shortens the purge times required during system startup.
Corrosion Resistance
An enriched chromium oxide layer forms on the inner surface during the electropolishing treatment. This layer provides superior resistance to corrosive gases.
Assembly Method
Orbital welding under high purity argon shielding joins individual lengths of the pipe without introducing oxygen or contaminants. Any oxidation during assembly would compromise the internal smooth surface and lead to particulate shedding. Standard mechanical compression fittings are avoided in critical runs to eliminate dead legs where gas could become trapped.
