Meaning
This analytical process determines the root cause and assigns legal and financial liability when a cell or battery pack fails to meet performance or safety standards. For battery procurement, failure attribution establishes whether a defect originated during cell manufacturing, pack assembly, or field operations. This investigation method does not apply to normal, expected degradation and wear of the battery over its rated service life.
Procurement contracts define the diagnostic tests, teardown protocols, and independent lab reviews used to resolve these technical and financial disputes.
Diagnostic Protocols
Engineers perform non-destructive tests like computed tomography and voltage monitoring before carefully disassembling the failed battery pack. Once open, physical evidence like melted terminals, electrode cracking, or separator puncture is analyzed to locate the origin of the fault. These physical signs help determine if the failure was caused by a manufacturing defect or by improper external electrical loads.
Sourcing agreements require both parties to agree on the laboratory standards used for these forensic teardowns.
Financial Liability
If the investigation reveals a cell manufacturing defect, the cell supplier must cover the costs of replacement, rework, and potential field recalls. Conversely, if the fault is linked to improper thermal management or physical damage from pack assembly, the pack integrator bears the cost. Clear diagnostic evidence is essential to resolve these claims and prevent costly legal disputes between suppliers and buyers.
Procurement teams use these analysis results to update warranty clauses and adjust supplier risk profiles.
Preventive Updates
Once the cause is identified, manufacturing lines are updated with improved quality controls and testing procedures to prevent the issue from reoccurring. For example, if loose weld joints caused the failure, the welding process windows are tightened and additional inspection steps are added. These feedback loops improve the long-term quality and reliability of the battery production line.
Sourcing managers monitor these process updates to ensure the supplier remains compliant with high-quality standards.
