Meaning
Transducers that convert mechanical pressure or tension into an electrical signal allow for the monitoring of physical loads within a system. A force sensor placed between battery cells measures the expansion pressure generated during charging and discharging. This data helps the control system detect abnormal swelling that might indicate cell degradation.
Transducer Function
Piezoresistive or capacitive elements detect small changes in the physical distance between internal plates. The force sensor provides a voltage output that is proportional to the weight or pressure applied to its surface. These instruments must be thin enough to fit within the module without taking up excessive volume.
Signal Accuracy
High resolution electronics filter out electrical noise to ensure the readings are reliable. A force sensor used in a battery pack must maintain its accuracy across a wide temperature range. Calibration is performed at the factory to map the signal output to specific Newton or Kilogram values.
Installation Placement
Locating these devices at the end of a cell stack allows for the measurement of cumulative expansion. The force sensor acts as an early warning system for the battery management unit. If the measured pressure exceeds the safety limit, the system can stop the current flow to prevent a mechanical failure of the housing.
