Meaning
High purity inert gas containing at least ninety nine point nine nine nine percent argon is used as a protective atmosphere in metallurgical and electronic processes. To meet the requirements of grade 5 argon, the total concentration of all impurities must not exceed ten parts per million. This level of purity is necessary to prevent chemical reactions with hot metals or semiconductor substrates during manufacturing.
Impurity Limit
Specifications for this grade constrain specific contaminants like oxygen, nitrogen, and moisture to very low levels. Oxygen must remain below two parts per million and water vapor must not exceed three parts per million.
Industrial Application
Powder bed fusion and other additive manufacturing processes for reactive metals like titanium rely on this inert atmosphere to prevent brittleness. Using grade 5 argon prevents nitrogen absorption which would otherwise degrade the mechanical properties of the finished component. It is also used to purge analytical instruments before running sensitive tests.
Quality Assurance
Certification of gas batches involves continuous sampling using high sensitivity gas chromatographs or moisture analyzers. Gas cylinders are equipped with dedicated valves to prevent backflow and contamination. Cylinders are pre evacuated before filling to remove any residual atmospheric air, ensuring the purity is maintained from the plant to the point of use.
