Meaning
Reactive sealing components protect joints and openings in a battery enclosure by expanding when exposed to high temperatures. The installation of intumescent gaskets prevents the escape of hot gases and flames through door gaps and cable penetrations during a fire. These seals remain flexible and low-profile during normal operation but swell to many times their original size when a fire occurs.
Expansion Mechanism
Heat triggers a chemical reaction in the graphite-based material of the seal. As intumescent gaskets expand, they create a charred layer that acts as an insulator and blocks the passage of oxygen and heat. This pressure-forming action fills even irregular gaps created by the warping of metal doors under heat stress.
Application Area
Enclosure manufacturers place these seals around the perimeter of the battery compartment doors and at the entry points for power cables. Using intumescent gaskets ensures that the fire remains contained within a single module for the duration of the rated period.
Hardware Specification
Design engineers select the thickness and expansion ratio of the seal based on the expected gap size during a thermal event. The durability of intumescent gaskets is tested through furnace trials where the seal must maintain its integrity for several hours.
