Meaning
Insulating adhesive layers provide a hermetic seal between the metal current collector tabs and the aluminum plastic laminate of a pouch cell. A polymer tab film must bond perfectly to both the metal surface and the inner lining of the pouch to prevent electrolyte leakage. This material is typically a modified polypropylene that melts and fuses during the heat sealing process.
The integrity of this bond is vital for the long term shelf life of the battery.
Chemical Resistance
Electrolytes contain aggressive solvents and salts that can dissolve or weaken standard adhesives. The polymer tab film is specifically engineered to withstand hydrofluoric acid and other decomposition products found inside the cell. It acts as a barrier that prevents moisture from entering and gases from escaping.
Thermal Stability
Heat generated at the tabs during high current discharge can soften the seal if the material is not properly selected. A high quality polymer tab film maintains its mechanical strength and adhesive properties at temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius. If the film fails, the resulting leak leads to the rapid oxidation of the internal components and potential thermal runaway.
Manufacturing Precision
Application of the film requires clean metal surfaces and precise control of temperature, pressure, and time. If the polymer tab film is misaligned or contaminated, the seal will be compromised. Modern production lines use automated vision systems to verify the placement and thickness of the film before the final sealing step.
