Meaning
Elastomeric joining material formulated with polyurethane resins bonds battery cells to module structures while absorbing mechanical shock and vibrations. The use of polyurethane adhesive provides both mechanical strength and compliance in battery packs, helping to protect cells from the stresses of daily driving. It is widely used in automotive modules because of its balance of flexibility and strength.
Structural Flexibility
High elongation capacity allows the cured adhesive to stretch without tearing during cell expansion. When the battery cells swell during charging, the flexible bond deforms to distribute the stress across the joint, preventing damage to the rigid housing. This elastomeric property reduces the stress concentrated on individual cells.
Process Application
Dual-component liquid resins are mixed in the nozzle and applied to the battery module by robotic dispensers. The material cures at room temperature without requiring heat, which protects the temperature-sensitive cells from thermal damage during assembly. High initial tack holds the parts in place while the adhesive cures.
Safety Performance
Formulations containing flame-retardant additives help prevent the spread of fire between cells in the event of a thermal failure. The material acts as a barrier that slows down heat transfer, containing the thermal event to a single cell or section of the module. This barrier increases the safety margin of the entire pack.
In addition, the cured material provides electrical insulation that prevents high-voltage short circuits between the battery cells and the metal cooling plates during crash events.
