Meaning
Electronic filtering method isolates specific portions of a reflected wave based on their height and arrival time. Applying signal amplitude gating allows inspectors to focus on flaws that exceed a certain size while ignoring background noise. It is a fundamental step in the digital processing of ultrasonic data.
Parameter Setting
Adjustment of the vertical threshold determines which signals are recorded for further analysis. In signal amplitude gating, the gate is positioned over the area of interest, such as the bond line of a battery cooling plate. Any peak that breaks the line is flagged as a potential defect.
Data Management
Sorting the signals into categories based on their strength helps in the creation of a clear map of the internal structure. Because signal amplitude gating removes irrelevant echoes from the front and back surfaces, the resulting scan image is much easier to interpret. The software can be programmed to trigger an alarm automatically when a signal exceeds the limit.
This automation is necessary for high-speed production lines where manual review of every waveform is impossible. It allows for the rapid sorting of parts into acceptable or rejected bins.
Analysis Limitation
Effectiveness of the filter depends on the signal to noise ratio of the raw data. Signal amplitude gating cannot distinguish between a real flaw and a reflection from a complex geometric feature if they share the same height. The operator must verify the settings at the start of every shift.
