Meaning
Shape analysis of individual metal particles is a key quality control step in powder metallurgy. This geometric property is quantified by the sphericity index, which ranges from zero for highly irregular shapes to one for a perfect sphere. Particles with a high index are desirable because they flow and pack more efficiently.
This index is directly affected by the cooling rate and gas chemistry during atomization.
Measurement Method
Dynamic image analysis is used to measure the sphericity index of thousands of particles in a flowing stream. The system calculates the ratio of the perimeter of an equivalent area circle to the real perimeter of the particle. This automated method provides a statistical distribution of shapes across the powder batch.
Flow Impact
High sphericity ensures that the powder can be easily spread into uniform layers during additive manufacturing. Irregular particles with low sphericity tend to lock together, which reduces flowability and causes feeding problems. In battery electrode manufacturing, spherical precursor particles allow for higher packing densities and better electrochemical performance.
Sourcing Criteria
Purchase contracts for high-grade powders often specify a minimum average sphericity index of zero point nine. This requirement helps guarantee consistent processing performance in downstream automated systems.
