Meaning
Graphical or numerical representation of how the thickness of a fluid changes under varying shear rates or temperatures. Viscosity profile defines the flow behavior of a battery slurry during different stages of the coating process. It provides a map of the material’s resistance to deformation.
Shear Sensitivity
Non-Newtonian fluids used in energy storage often exhibit shear thinning behavior. A typical viscosity profile shows high resistance at rest, which prevents the settling of heavy particles. As the material moves through a pump or nozzle, the resistance drops to allow for easier flow.
Process Optimization
Understanding the response of a paste to different speeds allows for better equipment sizing. If the viscosity profile indicates a steep drop in resistance at high shear, a smaller pump might be sufficient for a high speed line. Designers use this data to calculate the pressure drops across pipes, valves, pumps and mixers.
Quality Control
Consistency between different batches of raw materials is verified by comparing their rheological signatures. Deviations in the viscosity profile suggest changes in the particle size distribution or the moisture content of the powder. Maintaining a stable profile is a prerequisite for achieving a uniform coating on the electrode foil.
