Meaning
Spectrometric analysis methods identify and measure the elemental composition of materials by detecting the characteristic x-rays emitted when a sample is excited by a high-energy source. The technique of x-ray fluorescence provides a non-destructive way to measure the thickness and composition of metal coatings on electrical conductors. It is widely used to verify the composition of battery terminals and connector alloys.
Scientific Mechanism
Excitation begins when a primary x-ray beam from the instrument strikes the sample, knocking out electrons from the inner shells of the atoms. As outer-shell electrons fall into these empty spots, they emit x-rays with an energy that is unique to each element. The instrument’s detector measures the energy and intensity of these emitted x-rays to determine the concentration of the elements present.
This measurement occurs quickly, often in less than a minute, without damaging the test sample. Standard calibration curves from certified reference materials are used to convert the raw intensity counts into precise weight percentage values for each detected element.
Physical Limitation
Penetration of the x-ray beam is limited to the surface layers of the material, which means the test only measures the surface composition. For very light elements, the emitted x-rays are too weak to be detected, restricting the method to heavier metals. Accuracy can also be affected by sample surface roughness or variations in the thickness of the coating.
These limits require operators to use flat, uniform surfaces for the most reliable measurements.
Quality Control
Production lines for battery components use this method to audit the quality of electroplated copper and nickel layers. Sourcing contracts specify allowable coating thicknesses, and x-ray fluorescence testing provides the fast, non-destructive measurements needed to check every batch of parts. Sourcing teams use the generated test reports to verify that suppliers are meeting the specified plating requirements.
This testing ensures that only high-quality, corrosion-resistant parts are integrated into the final assemblies.
