Meaning
Baseline electrochemical conditions established by discharging a cell to a specified cutoff voltage at a controlled temperature provide the standard starting point for all subsequent measurements. This zero state reference ensures that all capacity, internal resistance, and state-of-charge measurements are made from the same initial electrical condition. This process is applied before starting any test cycle and is used during both lab tests and pack-level control system operations.
Sourcing teams require this reference to compare the capacity of different cells and ensure they are getting what they paid for.
Reference Protocol
To set the reference, the cell is discharged at a low current until it hits its minimum safe voltage, then it is allowed to rest until the temperature is stable. This removes any leftover electrical charges and ensures a clean test.
Measurement Accuracy
Without a clear reference, measurements of battery capacity and health are inaccurate and inconsistent. If one cell is tested from a slightly higher starting voltage than another, the capacity results cannot be compared fairly. This makes it impossible for sourcing managers to verify if a supplier’s cells are meeting their performance specs.
Having a standardized starting point ensures that all quality audits and factory tests are fair, accurate, and repeatable.
Supplier Contract
Sourcing agreements define the exact steps to establish the reference during quality checks. This prevents disputes with the supplier over cell capacity and ensures that the test results are legally defensible.
