Meaning
Large-format cylindrical lithium-ion battery housing format measures forty-six millimetres in diameter by eighty millimetres in height. Manufacturers utilize the 46800 cell configuration to decrease the number of individual connections required in an electric vehicle pack, shifting more structural burden onto the cells themselves. Choosing a tabless design reduces the electrical resistance and heat generation that would otherwise arise in such a large electrode assembly.
High active material proportion is achieved due to the increased volume compared to traditional formats.
Thermal Behaviour
Heat dissipation represents the primary challenge of using these larger cylindrical dimensions. Because the radial heat transfer path is longer than in smaller formats, the cell relies on top or bottom cooling surfaces to maintain stable temperatures. Internal temperature gradients can cause uneven current density and localized degradation if the thermal management system fails to pull heat from the core.
Mechanical Integrity
Thicker steel casing provides structural strength that allows pack designers to integrate these units into the vehicle chassis. Cell-to-pack integration relies on the mechanical strength of the cell to absorb external impact loads. While this eliminates separate module frames and saves weight, it subjects the battery casings to constant mechanical stresses during driving.
Manufacturing Scale
High speed continuous winding lines assemble the electrodes of these cylinders. The resulting high volume output makes the format attractive for electric vehicle platforms.
