Meaning
Industrial methodology for the direct assembly of battery cells into a finished battery pack without the use of intermediate modules. Cell-to-pack automation integrates structural bonding and electrical connection steps into a single continuous sequence. Unified architecture simplifies the mechanical design of the energy storage system.
Structural Bonding
Adhesive application systems place structural resins directly onto the cell casing to create a rigid assembly. In cell-to-pack automation, the robotically controlled dispense head follows a complex path to ensure every cell adheres to the cooling plate. This bond provides both thermal transfer and mechanical support.
Assembly Throughput
High speed pick and place machines position hundreds of cells per minute into the tray. Efficiency in cell-to-pack automation stems from the removal of the housing and wiring harnesses associated with traditional modules. Eliminating these components reduces the mass of the battery and increases the energy density.
Laser welding stations join the cell tabs directly to a large scale busbar.
Integration Requirement
Tight tolerances on cell dimensions are necessary for the success of the unified assembly process. If the cell-to-pack automation system encounters a cell with a bulging casing, the structural adhesive might not fill the resulting gap. Vision systems inspect the alignment of the cells before the final electrical connections are made.
