Meaning
Manufacturing consistency assessments for mass production lines measure the capability of a process to produce output within specified limit boundaries. This index, designated as Cpk, compares the process mean and spread against the upper and lower engineering tolerance limits. It accounts for processes that are not perfectly centered on the nominal target.
Quality Metric
High indices demonstrate that the manufacturing process is highly centered and has low variability. Calculating Cpk requires measuring a critical cell dimension or electrical property across a representative production sample. Higher values correspond to lower defect rates.
Factory Performance
Industrial battery assembly requires consistent inputs to ensure pack safety and uniformity. Improving the process Cpk reduces the number of out-of-spec cells that must be scrapped or reworked during manufacturing. It minimizes the production waste and lowers unit costs.
Contractual Value
Purchase agreements for battery cells often specify a minimum process capability for key performance characteristics. Sourcing managers use Cpk to verify that the supplier can consistently meet requirements like internal resistance or capacity over the entire production run. A value below the specified minimum can trigger supply penalties or reject entire batches, forcing the manufacturer to halt the line and adjust their processes before resuming shipments to the customer.
