Meaning
Electrochemical processes that cause the decline of battery capacity or power capability define the pathways of cell wear. These pathways, commonly classified as degradation modes, include loss of active material and loss of lithium inventory. Under typical operating conditions, these phenomena occur simultaneously at different rates depending on temperature and discharge currents.
Sourcing specifications often limit the allowable acceleration of these processes over the warrantied lifespan.
Physical Origin
Loss of active material occurs when the electrode particles fracture or lose electrical contact with the current collector due to repeated volume changes during cycling. Chemical side reactions also consume active lithium ions to form additional passive layers, another of the critical degradation modes. This chemical consumption reduces the total cycle life of the pack.
When the cell operates at high voltage, transition metals dissolve from the cathode and migrate to the anode, accelerating the decline. Furthermore, parasitic electrolyte oxidation at the cathode surface contributes to gas generation and impedance rise.
Diagnostic Extraction
Analysis of differential capacity curves allows engineers to identify specific wear patterns without destroying the cell. These non destructive test methods isolate individual degradation modes by measuring shifts in voltage plateaus. By tracking the changes in the peaks of the dQ by dV curves over thousands of cycles, researchers isolate anode degradation from cathode degradation.
This diagnostic precision helps cell designers improve active material formulations.
Sourcing Consequence
Cell procurement contracts require quantification of these wear mechanisms under extreme climate scenarios. Understanding these degradation modes determines the thermal management requirements of the vehicle battery pack. Sourcing teams use the acceleration factors of these modes to establish baseline pricing for extended warranty options.
This contractual risk management depends directly on verified lab testing.
