Meaning
Vertical air gaps maintained between storage racks and battery modules allow for the effective distribution of water from overhead fire suppression systems. Proper flue space clearances are essential for warehouse fire safety because they ensure that heat can rise to activate sprinklers and that water can flow down to the lower levels of the rack. These gaps act as chimneys during a fire, allowing smoke and hot gases to reach the ceiling sensors quickly.
Without these spaces, a fire could grow undetected between the battery modules, blocked from the reach of the fire protection system. The dimensions of these clearances are governed by NFPA 13 and vary based on the height of the racks and the type of storage.
Airflow Requirement
Maintaining open paths for air to move vertically through the racking system is a critical operational task for warehouse managers. Ensuring flue space clearances means that battery modules must be positioned with at least six inches of gap between the back of the racks and between individual pallets. This airflow allows the building ventilation system to remove heat during normal operation and helps prevent the accumulation of flammable gases.
If these spaces are blocked by overhanging modules or debris, the risk of a localized hot spot increases significantly. Staff must be trained to recognize the importance of these gaps and to avoid using them as extra storage space for packaging materials or tools.
Rack Geometry
Designing the shelving system to include permanent spacers or stops ensures that the necessary gaps are maintained even as inventory is moved. During the installation of flue space clearances, contractors may use metal bars or mesh panels to prevent pallets from being pushed too deep into the rack. This structural approach removes the reliance on human accuracy and guarantees that the vertical path for water remains open at all times.
The geometry of the rack must also account for the placement of in rack sprinklers if they are required by the fire code. These physical safeguards are inspected during the initial setup of the facility and are checked again during annual safety audits to confirm that they have not been removed or bypassed.
Sprinkler Effectiveness
Water delivery from the overhead system depends on the ability of the droplets to penetrate deep into the storage array to reach the source of the fire. The existence of flue space clearances is the only way for the sprinkler discharge to reach the lower tiers of a high bay warehouse. If the flue is blocked, the water will simply pool on top of the upper modules, leaving the lower fire to grow and potentially cause a structural failure of the rack.
This requirement is especially important for batteries, which can produce intense heat that must be cooled directly to stop thermal runaway. Regular inspections by the fire marshal focus on these clearances to ensure the warehouse is prepared for an emergency.
