Meaning
Electro-optical instrument that measures the distance to a target surface by projecting a laser beam and detecting the reflected light. A laser displacement sensor provides high-precision measurements of cell thickness changes during expansion and contraction. The instrument is utilized in both lab testing and inline assembly stations.
Measurement Mechanism
Reflected light from the target surface is focused onto a charge-coupled device or position-sensitive detector. Shifts in the position of the reflected light correspond to changes in the distance to the target. This non-contact method avoids applying external forces that could distort the measurement of soft pouch cells.
Sourcing Integration
Sourcing contracts for test equipment specify the resolution and frequency requirements of these sensors for cell validation. Procurement teams use these high-precision instruments to verify that cells from different suppliers meet swell tolerances. Accurately tracking thickness changes helps to validate mechanical models of the pack.
Manufacturing Application
Sensors are installed on the assembly line to measure the height and flatness of battery modules before casing. Detecting out-of-spec dimensions early prevents mechanical assembly failures and ensures consistent thermal contact with the cooling plate. Continuous data logging also helps to identify tool wear in the compression fixtures.
These automated checks run inline without slowing the cycle time of the production line and provide complete traceability for each module.
