Meaning
Atmosphere control systems deliver a continuous stream of inert gas across the build area in metal additive manufacturing. Effective LPBF gas flow is necessary to protect the melting process from oxygen contamination and to remove hazardous process byproducts. This circulation maintains the high-purity environment required to produce dense, high-strength metal components.
It also regulates the convective heat loss from the top of the powder bed, stabilizing the thermal history of the build.
Byproduct Transportation
The gas stream carries vaporized metal particles and spatter away from the active melting zone to the filtration system. Inadequate LPBF gas flow allows these heavy particles to settle on the powder bed or deposit on the laser window. This settling can lead to localized defects, such as porosity and surface roughness, in the printed parts.
Velocity Distribution
Printers must deliver a uniform gas speed across the entire surface of the build plate. Maintaining consistent LPBF gas flow prevents regional variations in heat transfer and plume removal. Low-velocity zones, often found at the outer edges of the build plate, are prone to higher defect rates.
Equipment Sourcing
Procurement specifications define the required gas velocity, volumetric flow rate and filter capacity for the printer. High-performance LPBF gas flow systems feature aerodynamically optimized nozzles that prevent turbulent recirculation zones. These features are critical when purchasing machines destined for the production of critical aerospace or medical hardware.
