Meaning
Resistance to crack propagation under localized stress is a fundamental mechanical property evaluated in brittle materials like cemented carbides. The palmqvist fracture toughness method calculates this resistance by measuring the total length of cracks that propagate from the corners of a Vickers hardness indentation. This approach provides a reliable measure of the material’s durability under heavy impact loads.
Crack Initiation
High concentrated loads applied during a standard hardness test exceed the local tensile strength of the hardmetal. Under these conditions, the palmqvist fracture toughness test initiates cracks at the four sharp corners of the pyramidal impression. These cracks run parallel to the surface, and their lengths are proportional to the toughness of the material.
Calculation Formula
Measuring the sum of the crack lengths allows engineers to calculate the toughness value using a formula that relates load, indent size, and crack extension. This calculation assumes that the cracks are shallow and do not penetrate deeply into the specimen. The resulting value is expressed in megapascals times the square root of a meter.
Sourcing Relevance
Procurement teams specify this parameter when purchasing wear parts and cutting tools for heavy duty operations. High toughness prevents premature tool failure during hard rock drilling or high feed milling.
