Meaning
Thermal management strategy uses specialized cooling paths to remove heat from the flat surfaces or terminals of pouch-format battery cells. Implementing pouch cell cooling involves choosing between surface cooling and tab cooling configurations. The design must operate within the volume limits of the battery module to maintain high energy density.
This targeted heat removal is critical for preventing thermal runaway during fast charging.
Cooling Setup
Surface cooling utilizes large liquid plates that press against the flat faces of the pouch cell. This method provides a large heat transfer area but must overcome the low thermal conductivity of the electrode layers. Tab cooling focuses on the metal terminals where much of the heat is generated by current flow.
Combining both methods provides the most balanced thermal profile.
System Integration
Engineers must manage the electrical isolation between the cooling plates and the cell terminals to prevent short circuits. They use thermal interface materials that are electrically insulating but highly conductive to heat. These materials must also accommodate the expansion and contraction of the cell during cycling.
A well-designed cooling system ensures consistent performance.
Strategic Sourcing
Procurement managers evaluate the cooling requirements of different pouch cells when selecting a supplier. Cells that require less complex cooling systems reduce the overall weight and cost of the battery pack. This selection process balances cell price with pack-level integration costs.
Efficient thermal management improves both range and battery lifespan.
