Meaning
Environmental sealing effectiveness measures the ability of a flexible battery enclosure to prevent the ingress of water vapor and the egress of internal electrolyte. This property is vital for maintaining the chemical balance inside the battery and ensuring that it remains safe and functional for its entire life. Pouch cell hermeticity depends on the quality of the heat seals and the integrity of the multilayered packaging film.
If the seal is compromised, the sensitive lithium salts will react with moisture to create hazardous byproducts and internal gas. The measurement of this quality ends at the final assembly step where the cells are integrated into a larger battery module.
Sealing Performance
Fusion of the polymer layers at the edges of the cell creates the primary defense against the outside environment. High pouch cell hermeticity requires a perfect weld that is free of wrinkles, contaminants, or gaps. The area around the metal tabs is particularly difficult to seal because the polymer must bond to the flat surfaces of the current collectors.
Specialized coatings are often applied to the tabs to improve this adhesion and prevent micro-leaks. Testing the strength of these seals involves pulling the material apart to ensure the bond is stronger than the film itself.
Barrier Integrity
Resistance of the laminate material to gas and moisture transmission is the second pillar of a long lasting seal. While the aluminum foil core provides an excellent barrier, any cracks or pinholes created during the forming process will reduce the pouch cell hermeticity. Manufacturers use optical and electronic inspection tools to find these defects before the cell is filled with electrolyte.
The thickness of the polymer layers also plays a role in preventing the diffusion of small molecules over time. A robust barrier ensures that the internal chemistry remains isolated from the humidity of the air.
Storage Life
Retention of the liquid electrolyte and the prevention of chemical degradation are the ultimate goals of a high quality seal. When pouch cell hermeticity is maintained, the battery can be stored for years without a significant loss of performance. Any drop in this sealing quality will lead to the gradual drying out of the cell and an increase in internal resistance.
In the automotive industry, where packs are expected to last for fifteen years, this property is a key metric for supplier qualification. Reliable hermeticity is what allows the transition from heavy metal casings to lightweight flexible packaging in modern battery design.
