Meaning
Thermal decomposition occurs inside a rotating cylindrical reactor when oxygen is absent from the vessel. Rotary kiln pyrolysis converts scrap tires, plastic waste and biomass into valuable fuel oils, combustible gas fractions and solid carbon residues. Operating temperatures typically reach five hundred degrees Celsius to drive the endothermic breakdown of complex organic polymers without inducing total combustion.
Sector participants deploy rotary kiln pyrolysis to divert hard to manage industrial waste streams from landfills while recovering marketable chemical precursors.
Thermal Uniformity
Continuous material agitation inside the inclined rotating cylinder ensures uniform heat transfer across heterogeneous feedstock batches. Mechanical tumbling prevents localized overheating and thermal gradients that would otherwise degrade product quality in static batch vessels. Internal flight designs lift and cascade solid particles through heated gas streams to maximize direct thermal contact area.
Feedstock residence time depends on drum rotational velocity, internal inclination angle and feed rate adjustments.
Vapor Recovery
Secondary thermal cracking chambers receive volatile gases generated during solid breakdown to eliminate heavy tar fractions and long chain hydrocarbons. Condenser trains cool the remaining vapor stream to separate liquid bio oils from non condensable gases routed back to the burner system as auxiliary fuel. Pressure control valves maintain a slight negative draft inside the reaction zone to prevent fugitive emissions and atmospheric oxygen infiltration.
Proper condensation temperature management prevents fouling in downstream recovery piping networks.
Solid Residue
Carbonaceous char discharges continuously from the lower end of the heated cylinder through gas tight airlocks that preserve an inert internal atmosphere. Subsequent milling and activation procedures transform raw char into specialized carbon products suitable for rubber reinforcement and filtration applications. Inconsistent feedstock mineral content transfers directly into the ash fraction and restricts the market value of recovered solids.
Industrial purchasers evaluate ultimate analysis reports to verify that recovered carbon black meets strict ash limits before signing long term supply contracts.
