Meaning
Soft organopolysiloxane materials provide vibration damping and moisture protection for sensitive electronic components in a battery management system. Application of silicone gel allows for the encapsulation of complex wire bonds without exerting measurable mechanical stress during thermal cycling. These substances maintain a tacky, semi-liquid consistency that enables them to heal small cracks or voids automatically.
Encapsulation Property
Dielectric strength remains high even when the material is exposed to humid environments or high voltages. Because silicone gel is inherently hydrophobic, it prevents the formation of conductive paths between closely spaced circuit elements. This reliability is necessary for the long term operation of the sensing leads and balancing circuits inside the pack.
Chemical Compatibility
Stability across a wide temperature range makes this material suitable for both extreme cold and high heat scenarios. However, the presence of silicone gel near certain battery chemistries requires careful consideration of potential outgassing. Some solvents found in electrolytes can cause the gel to swell or lose its adhesive properties.
Application Process
Dispensing usually involves a two-part mixture that cures at room temperature or with a slight heat assist. Precise volume control ensures that the silicone gel covers the intended area without overflowing into connectors or thermal interfaces.
