Meaning
A physical containment slot within a test fixture restricts the lateral movement of a battery cell during electrochemical testing to measure unidirectional expansion. The swelling test channel enforces a rigid boundary condition, allowing the sensor to capture the displacement along the thickness axis alone. As the cell charges and discharges, the volume changes exert force against the channel walls.
These changes are tracked to understand the mechanical behavior of the cell.
Fixture Design
The construction of the swelling test channel utilizes high-rigidity materials such as stainless steel or thick aluminum plates to prevent fixture deflection. In this configuration, the channel holds the cell under a defined preload force to simulate pack-level containment. Non-conductive liners prevent electrical shorting between the cell casing and the metal walls.
These liners also serve to isolate the thermal signature of the cell during cycling.
Instrumentation Method
A combination of load cells and displacement sensors monitors the pressure and expansion within the swelling test channel. The data acquired from these sensors allow developers to map the structural changes of the anode material. This mapping helps in identifying the onset of lithium plating during fast charging.
Cell Performance
Excessive expansion forces can damage the internal structure of the cell. Proper measurement of these forces helps in design of pack containment systems.
