Meaning
An electrical safety evaluation procedure simulates a low-impedance connection across the external terminals of a lithium battery cell. This test, referred to as an external short circuit, determines the ability of a battery to withstand fault conditions without catching fire or undergoing a thermal runaway event. Testing ensures that the protection circuitry or the internal current limiting components prevent overheating when the positive and negative poles contact each other directly.
The evaluation applies primarily to secondary lithium-ion cells in the finished state and defines the boundary of safe operation for the energy storage unit during shipping and use.
Performance Expectation
The test methodology specifies that the short circuit occurs at a defined temperature, typically twenty or fifty-five degrees Celsius, to observe how the cell chemistry reacts under thermal stress. The circuit resistance remains below a specified milliohm value to ensure the fault draws the maximum possible current from the pack or cell. Data collectors monitor the surface temperature of the casing throughout the duration of the fault to ensure it remains below the failure threshold set by the governing standard.
Engineers observe whether the vent mechanisms open or if the casing ruptures during the dissipation of energy.
Failure Criterion
Detection of fire or explosion during the test period results in a failed classification for the battery type. Any external casing temperature exceeding the maximum threshold established by the regulatory framework indicates that the design lacks the required internal protection to mitigate the short circuit hazard. Leakage of electrolytes or venting of toxic gases also triggers a failure result, even if the cell avoids an open flame.
Compliance rests upon the design keeping the discharge energy controlled until the potential energy drops to a stable level.
Safety Verification
Certification laboratories maintain standardized test benches to confirm that manufacturers meet these safety requirements before shipment of lithium batteries. Documentation of these results supports the safety data sheet required for transport across international borders. Independent testing verifies that the protection devices inside the cell interrupt the current flow fast enough to prevent hazardous thermal events.
The successful completion of this test provides the definitive proof that the cell construction maintains integrity under direct terminal contact.
