Meaning
International transport safety standards require rigorous simulated transit testing, and UN 38.3 Test T.3 is the vibration test procedure designed to evaluate the mechanical stability of lithium cells and batteries during shipping. This procedure simulates the physical vibrations experienced by cargo in trucks, ships, and aircraft. It ensures that the electrical connections and structural components of the battery remain intact during transit.
Test Protocol
Evaluation runs subject the test samples to a sinusoidal vibration waveform that varies between seven and two hundred hertz. This sweep is repeated over several hours across three mutually perpendicular axes. The precise acceleration levels depend on the mass of the battery under test.
Pass Criteria
Tested batteries must show no mass loss, no leakage, no venting, and no disassembly to pass the evaluation. The open circuit voltage of each cell after the test must remain within a specified percentage of its pre-test value. This electrical check ensures that internal shorts have not occurred.
Logistical Significance
Completion of this test is mandatory before any commercial shipment of lithium batteries can take place. It reduces the risk of in-transit thermal runaway caused by mechanical wear. Sourcing organizations must verify the test certificates before shipping products.
