Meaning
Conical spring components provide high clamping force within a compact axial space to maintain constant pressure on battery assemblies. Integrating a Belleville washer in the cell module stack accommodates the expansion and contraction of the cells during charge and discharge cycles. This physical adjustment prevents structural loosening and ensures stable electrical contact over long operational lives.
Force Maintenance
Constant tension is applied by the deflection of the curved metal disk, which exerts a predictable resistance against the expanding cells. When the cells expand during lithium insertion, the disk flattens slightly while maintaining a stable load on the endplates. This responsive action avoids the high peak pressures that would damage the cell casings or degrade the active materials.
By keeping the tension within a tight range, the assembly avoids both over compression and loose connections.
Mechanical Response
Hysteresis within the metal structure dampens sudden shocks and absorbs vibration in mobile applications. Standard helical springs cannot provide equivalent loads within the restricted boundaries of a modern battery module. Using these washers allows designers to configure secure fastening systems that survive severe vibration tests.
Space Efficiency
Minimizing the envelope of the compression system leaves more room for active cell volume inside the pack. A single washer can exert thousands of newtons of force while occupying only a few millimeters of height. This high power density makes it a preferred choice for heavy duty electric vehicle platforms where space is limited.
