Meaning
Formal evaluation protocol of the first production run from a new or modified manufacturing tool verifies the capability of the process to meet engineering requirements. In cell production, first article qualification is performed whenever a new supplier is brought online or a tooling change occurs on the line. This process requires a detailed inspection report that compares each dimension of the manufactured part against the original engineering drawings.
Evaluation Protocol
Physical inspection and performance testing form the core of the validation procedure. Evaluators check properties like electrode density and weld strength on the initial batch to confirm the process is stable. The resulting data is documented in a First Article Inspection Report, which must be approved before high-volume manufacturing can start.
Production Quality
Verifying these initial parts prevents the mass production of defective cells and ensures that the tooling setup is correct. If the first article fails to meet the required quality metrics, the production run is halted and the tool is adjusted. The qualification process is then repeated with a new sample batch to ensure the issue is resolved.
Contractual Handoff
Commercial release occurs only after the formal sign-off on the inspection report has been received by the tooling supplier. This milestone often triggers the final release of capital payment for the tooling and allows the supplier to transition the line into standard production mode. Achieving this approval ensures that any subsequent cells produced will meet the long-term performance commitments established in the supply contract, which protects the buyer from early-stage component defects.
The approved report also establishes the baseline for all subsequent quality audits conducted throughout the lifetime of the program.
