Meaning
Reference block containing precisely machined holes with flat ends calibrates ultrasonic testing equipment for non-destructive inspection of battery materials and welds. This artifact, designated as a flat-bottom hole standard, allows technicians to correlate the amplitude of reflected sound waves with the size of actual internal defects. It ensures consistency across different testing locations and manufacturing batches.
Calibration Method
The test involves placing the transducer over the reference block to measure the acoustic reflection from the flat bottom of the machined hole. This measurement provides a baseline reflection curve that represents a hundred percent signal loss at a specific depth. By comparing real production weld echoes against this baseline, inspectors can determine if internal cracks or voids exceed the allowable limit.
Supplier Sourcing
Sourcing contracts for high-current copper-aluminum busbar welds specify the use of these standards to verify weld consistency. Inspection equipment must be calibrated daily to guarantee that the signal analysis is not drifting over time. This requirement protects the purchasing company from receiving batches with weak terminal joints that could fail under thermal stress.
Standard Limit
Near-field interference of the transducer limits the detection resolution when the target area is too close to the surface. The standard is therefore limited to inspecting defects that sit at least several millimetres deep.
