Meaning
Cylindrical cell cores comprising wound layers of anode, cathode, and separator material serve as the active electrochemical assembly within the metallic housing. Sourcing teams evaluate the mechanical quality of the jellyroll because any internal alignment defects can cause internal short circuits. This rolled configuration is the standard design for cylindrical cells used in consumer electronics and electric vehicles.
The application of this structure is bounded by the maximum heat dissipation capability of the wound layers, which limits the diameter of the cell.
Winding Process
Precision winding machinery is required to assemble the active layers without introducing wrinkles or misalignments. The tension on the separator and electrode webs must be controlled to prevent stress concentrations. Sourcing managers audit the cell manufacturing line to verify that the winding equipment operates in a cleanroom environment.
Any microscopic metal particles trapped during winding can puncture the separator during subsequent cycles. This leads to high self-discharge rates or catastrophic failure during operation. The alignment of the electrode edges must be monitored using automated X-ray inspection systems to ensure proper overlap and prevent lithium plating.
Mechanical Stress
Volumetric changes during cycling generate high radial pressures within the wound structure. The continuous expansion and contraction of the active materials can cause the layers to warp or delaminate. This deformation reduces the active area of the cell and accelerates capacity fade.
Designers must optimize the core mandrel diameter to accommodate these internal stresses.
Sourcing and Quality
Supplier evaluation focuses on the rejection rates at the winding and X-ray inspection stations. Low yields at these points indicate poor process control and increase the risk of latent defects in the shipped cells. Sourcing contracts should define the maximum allowable self-discharge rate, which acts as an indicator of minor separator damage.
This protects the buyer from receiving batches with a higher probability of early field failures.
