Meaning
Fluid transport thresholds define the thermal boundary where entrained moisture or heavy hydrocarbons solidify within process piping. Liquid freeze off occurs when localized temperature drops below the freezing point of liquid contaminants during gas expansion or cryogenic cooling, causing solid blockages in flow channels. Pressure drops across valves accelerate local cooling through the Joule-Thomson effect, forcing liquid phases to crystallize on internal surfaces.
Freezing restricts process flow and elevates upstream pressure. Continuous monitoring of dew point levels prevents unexpected phase changes during pressure reduction operations.
Moisture Boundary
Water content determines the exact thermal threshold where ice crystals nucleate inside piping. Occurrence of liquid freeze off drops when desiccant dryers reduce dew point levels below minimum system operating temperatures.
Valve Obstruction
Throttling components suffer immediate mass flow reduction when ice or hydrate formations collect on valve seats. In low-temperature gas supply systems, liquid freeze off distorts control valve calibration and causes complete actuator seizure. Mechanical scraping or external heat application is required to clear solidified blockages safely.
System Protection
Upstream chemical injection disrupts ice lattice formation before liquids convert into solid obstructions. Methanol or glycol dosing lowers the freezing point of entrained liquids, keeping fluid mixtures in liquid phase throughout pressure drops. Installing heat tracing along exposed line segments provides redundant protection against sudden thermal drops during system shutdown procedures.
