Meaning
Cathode active materials utilize a blend of four metals to enhance the energy density and stability of lithium ion cells. The material known as ncma contains high levels of nickel for capacity, alongside cobalt, manganese, and aluminum for structural and thermal endurance. This composition reduces the overall reliance on scarce mineral resources.
Nickel Content
High proportions of nickel allow for more lithium ions to be stored in the crystal lattice. In ncma, the nickel percentage often exceeds eighty percent, which directly increases the range of the vehicle. This energy boost is the primary reason for the adoption of this chemistry in premium electric cars.
Thermal Stability
Aluminum additives improve the safety of the cathode at high states of charge. While nickel provides the power, ncma uses aluminum to stabilize the structure and prevent the release of oxygen when the battery is hot. This reduces the risk of exothermic reactions that could lead to fire.
Manganese further assists by maintaining the structural integrity of the crystal during repeated cycling. The synergy between these elements allows for higher operating voltages than previous generations of cathode materials.
Material Life
Durability is a hallmark of this quaternary metal oxide blend. Cells using ncma exhibit low capacity fade because the aluminum suppresses the mechanical cracking of the cathode particles. This results in a battery that can maintain its performance for hundreds of thousands of kilometers.
